Southwest Florida’s Most Beautiful Beaches

It’s no secret people flock to Southwest Florida for its inviting year-round temperatures. The pristine beaches, though, are what gave the area its nickname, Paradise. The soft, white sand and clear, blue water are the stuff tropical dreams are made of. From Fort Myers to Marco Island, you’ll find vegetation and wildlife near the water that few other places in the United States have to offer. Listed below you’ll find a few of our favorite beach getaways.

Fort Myers and Sanibel Island

Family Fun magazine dubbed the beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel tops in the southeast United States. Easy access to the sand and pleasant water temperatures make the area a favorite locale for beach-goers of all ages.
Gulfside City Park on Sanibel Island is ideal for those seeking to dodge large crowds. Lofty Australian pines near the center of the island provide shade for a quaint picnic. The park offers an excellent opportunity for shelling.
Recreational vehicle travelers will find Sanibel’s Tarpon Bay Beach more accommodating and popular than Gulfside City Park. Concessions are available during the winter.
If picturesque scenery and water sports are what you seek, South Fort Myers Beach is the place for you. Parasailing and fishing are just two of the activities visitors enjoy each year. Underneath a quaint gazebo couples get married year-round at Lovers Key State Recreation Area, Florida’s newest state park. Lovers Key is as far from the crowds as you can get. Dolphins frolic all around nearby Estero Bay. Kayaks are available for those wanting to venture into the water.

Bonita Springs, Naples and Marco Island

The southern beaches of Collier County have become known as the Paradise Coast over the years thanks to pristine waters, white sand and inviting temperatures.
A broad boardwalk that traverses sand dunes is the main attraction along sleepy Bonita Beach.
Farther south, Barefoot Beach Preserve has a learning center and nature trail families will love. Turtles, ospreys, bald eagles and an assortment of wildlife make the area an ideal place for nature lovers.
Just past a field of mangrove swamps lies Delnor-Wiggins State Park — a 300-foot beach perfect for sunbathing and swimming. Scuba diving, snorkeling, boating, fishing, hiking and kayaking are popular activities at the park.
In Naples crowds flock to Vanderbilt Beach, Lowdermilk Park and Naples Municipal Beach and Fishing Pier.
Vanderbilt Beach encompasses Gulf beaches and a tropical coastal hammock. Bird watching and shelling are always popular at Vanderbilt.
Lowdermilk features a gorgeous beach, picnic areas, sand volleyball courts, and a host of ducks that call the park home. The beach is within walking distance of trendy Fifth Avenue South where bistros and specialty shops cater to locals and tourists alike.
The boardwalk at Naples Municipal Beach and Fishing Pier offers a perfect vista of glorious sunsets just about everyday. The pier juts deep into the Gulf, and fishermen love it. No fishing license is required, so as long as you’ve got a fishing pole and some bait, you’re in good shape.

Marco Island

On Marco Island, the four-mile sun soaked stretch from South Marco Beach to Tigertail Beach offers some of the most breathtaking beaches in all of Southwest Florida. Warm temperatures make Marco Island an ideal place to spot dolphins, manatees and an assortment of colorful oceanic wildlife. Don’t miss the herons, gulls and sandpipers at nearby Sand Dollar Island.

Business / Employment in SW Florida

The U.S. Census Bureau predicts Florida's population will grow by 80 percent between 2000 and 2030 — the third-highest growth rate in the nation behind Nevada and Arizona. Experts predict more than 2 million people will inhabit Lee and Collier over the next 25 years. Its little doubt, Southwest Florida is growing by leaps and bounds.

As regional population explodes business opportunities will grow exponentially. According to the Collier County Chamber of Commerce, the fastest growing industries are wholesale trade, services, retail trade, government and construction.

As if the sheer numbers weren’t inviting enough, the area offers a number of extra incentives for entrepreneurs. There is no state personal income tax and corporate income tax is only 5.5 percent of an owner’s net income. Local banks actively lend through various small business administration (SBA) programs.

Local chambers of commerce help new businesses through promotion efforts, assisting in marketing and seminars for employees on improving business.

Cultural Resources and Activities in SW Florida

Over the past decade, the arts have transformed Southwest Florida into one of the state’s most cosmopolitan areas. Audiences delight in our performing arts scene, where talented local actors bring life to Broadway favorites and new plays at intimate community playhouses. Fine arts lovers will enjoy a host of exceptional galleries and studios. The galleries are bursting with brilliant renderings of the picturesque local environment, unique wildlife and breathtaking sunsets. In addition to the natural selections, you’ll find a wide variety of modernism, cubism, impressionism and abstract arts.

The centerpiece of Southwest Florida performing arts is Fort Myers’ Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall. For 20 years the venue has played host to the most popular shows and performing artists in the country. Cats, Mama Mia!, The Producers, Movin’ Out. You name it, they’ve had it. And if the show you’re looking for hasn’t played yet, chances are, it will.

In Naples, the Philharmonic Center for the Arts is the premier performing arts hall in Southwest Florida, hosting more than 400 events a year including world-class dance, opera, classical and popular music and Broadway musicals. The Phil features four art galleries and two sculpture gardens. The Collector's Corner offers an outstanding variety of art and rare gifts for sale.

Recreational Activities and Adventures

Southwest Florida is known as the Golf Capital of the World. More than 200 challenging courses pepper the area for players casual and competitive. As the snowbirds head north in the spring, course rates drop significantly and tee times are much easier to come by. If you’re lucky, you can find one of the many private courses open to the public from May through October.

The area is brimming for environmental enthusiasts. On the water recreational activities are without limit. Boating, kayaking, canoeing, skiing, sailing, fishing. You name the water sport, Paradise has it.

Land lovers might prefer shelling, sun bathing or bird watching. Nearby Everglades National Park is the only subtropical park on the continent. The park is known for its rich bird life, but it’s also the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles exist side by side. Airboat tours depart throughout the day from quirky Everglades City.

Collier and Lee counties take pride in their Parks and Recreation departments. Collier alone has more than a dozen family-friendly parks perfect for picnicking and fun.

In 1894, a visionary named Cyrus Reed Teed formed a colony he foretold would become a “New Jerusalem.” He and his followers practiced the religion of Koreshanity, which was conceived by Reed in his laboratory in upstate New York during what he termed as “Illumination.” Among his beliefs was that God had a male-female aspect (Koreshan prayers were to the Mother-Father) and the belief that the earth was a hollow sphere with all life, planets, moon and stars within it. Upon Teed’s death in 1908, membership began to decline until the four remaining members deeded the land to the state in 1961.
