Southwest Florida’s Most Beautiful Beaches
It’s no secret people flock to Southwest Florida for its inviting year-round temperatures. The pristine beaches, though, are what gave the area its nickname, Paradise. The soft, white sand and clear, blue water are the stuff tropical dreams are made of. From Fort Myers to Marco Island, you’ll find vegetation and wildlife near the water that few other places in the United States have to offer. Listed below you’ll find a few of our favorite beach getaways.
Fort Myers and Sanibel Island
Family Fun magazine dubbed the beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel tops in the southeast United States. Easy access to the sand and pleasant water temperatures make the area a favorite locale for beach-goers of all ages. Gulfside City Park on Sanibel Island is ideal for those seeking to dodge large crowds. Lofty Australian pines near the center of the island provide shade for a quaint picnic. The park offers an excellent opportunity for shelling. Recreational vehicle travelers will find Sanibel’s Tarpon Bay Beach more accommodating and popular than Gulfside City Park. Concessions are available during the winter. Dogs are allowed on Sanibel’s beaches providing you keep them on a leash and clean up after them. Captiva also has beautiful beaches but no dogs are welcome there.
If picturesque scenery and water sports are what you seek, South Fort Myers Beach is the place for you. Parasailing and fishing are just two of the activities visitors enjoy each year. Underneath a quaint gazebo couples get married year-round at Lovers Key State Recreation Area, Florida’s newest state park. Lovers Key is as far from the crowds as you can get. Dolphins frolic all around nearby Estero Bay. Kayaks are available for those wanting to venture into the water.
Bonita Springs, Naples and Marco Island
Bonita Beach is great for walking, shelling and a fun day with the family. For the dog lovers, Bonita is proud to now have a designated DOG BEACH; an area specifically designed so your dog can run freely, play in the surf with other puppies and even get a fresh water rinse off before heading home.
Farther south, Barefoot Beach Preserve Park is 342 acres of undeveloped land with a learning center and nature trail families will enjoy. Turtles, ospreys, bald eagles and an assortment of wildlife make this park an ideal place for nature lovers.
Just beyond the Mangrove preserve is Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park, a mile-long stretch of beach perfect for sunbathing and swimming. Snorkeling, boating, fishing, hiking and kayaking are popular activities at the park.
In Naples crowds flock to Vanderbilt Beach, Lowdermilk Park, Naples’ seven miles of white sand beach and the Naples Municipal Fishing Pier. Lowdermilk Park features a gorgeous beach, a pavilion with restrooms and a snack concession, picnic areas, sand volleyball courts, and a host of ducks that call the park home.
The Naples Municipal Fishing Pier offers a perfect vista of glorious sunsets just about every day. The pier juts 1000 feet deep into the Gulf, and fishermen love it. No fishing license is required, so as long as you’ve got a fishing pole and some bait, you’re in good shape. If you don’t catch your dinner from the pier, it is just a 3 block walk to the sophisticated but fun Third Street South shopping and dining district, where there are plenty of options for a fresh, delicious seafood dinner.
It’s pretty easy to find your way around in Naples because the ‘streets’ run north and south and ‘avenues’ go from east to west, ending at the beach. It is just a short walk from the beach along trendy Fifth Avenue South to the bistros and specialty shops catering to tourists and locals alike.
Tigertail Beach on Marco Island
On Marco Island, the four-mile sun soaked stretch from South Marco Beach to Tigertail Beach offers some of the most breathtaking beaches in all of Southwest Florida. Warm temperatures make Marco Island an ideal place to spot dolphins, manatees and an assortment of colorful oceanic wildlife. Don’t miss the herons, gulls and sandpipers at nearby Sand Dollar Island.
Business / Employment in SW Florida

The U.S. Census Bureau predicts Florida's population will grow by 80 percent between 2000 and 2030 — the third-highest growth rate in the nation behind Nevada and Arizona. Experts predict more than 2 million people will inhabit Lee and Collier over the next 25 years. It's little doubt, Southwest Florida is growing by leaps and bounds.
As regional population explodes business opportunities will grow exponentially. According to the Collier County Chamber of Commerce, the fastest growing industries are wholesale trade, services, retail trade, government and construction.
As if the sheer numbers weren’t inviting enough, the area offers a number of extra incentives for entrepreneurs. There is no state personal income tax and corporate income tax is only 5.5 percent of an owner’s net income. Local banks actively lend through various small business administration (SBA) programs.
Local chambers of commerce help new businesses through promotion efforts, assisting in marketing and seminars for employees on improving business.
One non-profit organization that is devoted to helping small businesses start, grow and succeed is called SCORE. They provide free consulting services on a broad variety of topics including writing a business plan, advertising and marketing strategies, negotiating leases, trademark registrations and navigating local government licensing and regulatory issues. The local chapter of SCORE has over 60 volunteer counselors who provide confidential business counseling services at no charge. By appointment: (239) 430-0081.
According to the 2011 US Census in both Collier and Lee Counties:
- The ratio of men to women is almost 50/50
- The population by age: Approximately 25% under 18, and 25% over 65.
- The percentage of women-owned firms is over 26%
- The estimated population of Collier County in 2011: 328,134
- The estimated population of Lee County in 2011: 631,330

Higher Education and Local School District Links
Former Governor Jeb Bush declared, "The state of education in Florida is stronger than ever." Southwest Florida schools truly are a testament to that statement. Area schools are among the best in the state when it comes to providing individual assistance to students. School curriculums offer a broad variety of subjects in an attempt to mold a well-rounded student. Literally thousands of students attend class at more than 100 elementary, middle, and high schools around the area. Florida Gulf Coast University, Edison State College, Hodges University, Southwest Florida College and Ave Maria University are the area's premier higher learning facilities. Each year, the universities provide a variety of challenging courses and varied majors.

Colleges and Universities
Ave Maria University • 877-283-8648 • NAPLES.AVEMARIA.EDU
The town of Ave Maria, located west of Naples, was the result of a dream project of Domino's Pizza founder Tom Monihan. There he created Ave Maria University, and the Barron Collier Companies built the new town around it. Ave Maria also has the area’s only law school, currently located off site, but with plans for moving to the main campus.
The charming, semi-circle town center, La Piazza, features various businesses to serve the community. The focal point is the massive marble sculpture that dominates the front of the Oratory. The area is gradually attracting manufacturing and other businesses at nearby business parks, thus ensuring a steady growth of the still young town. it is a charming and very clean city, filled with energy from the many young families, retirees, and others who are residents.
