Naples’ economy has forever relied on construction, hospitality and real estate, but now it looks as though our local economy may finally be diversifying.
Maine-based nonprofit Jackson Laboratory hopes to build a genetics research facility in Collier County near Ave Maria.
What does Jackson Laboratory do exactly? Its mission is to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating and curing human disease.
The Florida Senate and the House of Representatives have set aside $130 million to lure the company here, plus Jackson Laboratory is raising its own funds as well.
Though the company is expected to bring about 200 of its own employees to Collier, it is expected to generate about 400 jobs in its first year here and about 7,000 jobs over a 10-year period.
It is also anticipated to produce an economic impact of $835 million per year.
