8 Decorating Tips for Your Home Office

Decorating Your Home Office

Sure, the weather in Florida feels like a permanent vacation, but that doesn't mean it's all play and no work on the Paradise Coast. More people than ever are working from home with offices encouraging employees to practice social distancing.

Thanks to modern technology, anyplace that accommodates a laptop and WiFi qualifies as an office. But how do you create an enjoyable home office space?

If your current commute is measured in steps instead of miles, here are eight ideas for creating an attractive and functional office in your own home.

  1. Opt for Taste, Not Trends
Your home office, like your bedroom, is a private sanctuary intended for your use alone. If non-traditional colors energize you, or you want to incorporate heirlooms and vintage pieces with sentimental value, go for it. The only rule is there are no rules.

  2. Optimize Vertical Space
In any home, storage is the name of the game, and that goes double in an office. Without adequate storage, clutter will quickly get out of hand and limit your productivity. Wall space provides options that allow you to preserve valuable real estate on the floor. Shelves and cabinets are obvious choices but consider creative ideas such as pegboard, hooks, and grid racks.

  3. Go Green
Bringing plants into your office is a good way to provide balance, both visually and mentally. Plants keep you connected to the outside world and keep the space from becoming dreary. Flowers add a welcome pop of color, while many green plants such as English ivy, spider plants, and dracaena help to purify indoor air.

  4. You Gotta Have Art
Wall hangings and other works of art serve a dual purpose in a home office. In addition to being decorative, these pieces can invigorate and inspire you, especially if the art speaks to you in a personal way.

  5. Let There Be Light
Without plenty of light, your office will soon feel more like a dungeon. Natural light is preferable, not only for the health benefits but for the way it makes a space look larger. If you add light sources, stick with cooler, bluish-white light for improved alertness. Yellow-tinged light tends to make people feel more sleepy.

  6. Don't Forget the Kids
Mom and dad aren't the only ones with important work to do. Kids will be more likely to finish their homework and other projects when they have their own "office" as well. Give the kids a voice in picking out colors and accessories to put their stamp on the space and set aside designated storage for each one's assignments, supplies, etc.

  7. Variations on a Theme
Are you a football fanatic? Maybe you're a movie buff. Whatever interest captures your heart, turn it into a theme for your office. Decorate with posters, memorabilia, and other related items that will make you happy just to walk in the room. Ultimately, you want this to be a space you enjoy being and working in on a daily basis!

  8. Accentuate the Positive
Do you get bored easily? Create an accent wall using peel-and-stick wallpaper, which comes in an endless variety of colors and patterns. Change it up based on seasons, holidays, or just a whim.
