5 Tips for Installing a Smart System for Your Garden

Smart Irrigation System

Do you dream about having the perfect lawn, garden, and landscaping but don't always have the time to monitor everything closely? There's a smart device for that! Installing a smart irrigation system is a great way to make sure all of your landscaping features are always getting the right amount of water and reduce water consumption in the process. With gardening season in full swing, now is the perfect time to make the switch. Our real estate agents are here to help with tips for installing a smart irrigation system for your Florida home.

  1. Check with Your Local Utility Locating Service Before You Start Digging

Before you start any project that involves digging in your yard, it's important to contact your local utility locating service to determine where it's safe to dig. Underground wires and pipes can be damaged easily by digging, which can create significant health risks. Once you know where everything is located, you can dig with the confidence that you won't be causing any damage.

  2. Find Where Your Existing Sprinkler Heads Are Located

A quality irrigation system might have been an attraction when you were shopping for Naples homes for sale, and now it's time to take that system to the next level. Start by finding where all of your existing sprinkler heads are located, which you can do by turning on the irrigation system. When the sprinkler heads pop up, use flags to mark each location so that you know exactly where to dig.

  3. Dig Around Existing Sprinkler Heads and Remove Them

With all of the sprinkler head locations identified, you can turn off your irrigation system and get ready to start digging. Dig around each of the flags that you placed so that all of the old sprinkler heads are exposed. Make sure that you're careful while digging to avoid damaging the rest of your irrigation system.

  4. Replace Your Old Sprinkler Heads with Your New Smart Sprinkler Heads

Now that you're done digging, you're ready to replace your old sprinkler heads. Start by unscrewing and removing each sprinkler head. Then, replace them with your new smart sprinkler heads while adhering to all manufacturer's instructions. If you're replacing an existing sprinkler head with a new drip sprinkler head, you will also need to run drip tubing to create a loop. Once your smart sprinkler heads are installed, place a small landscaping ring around each to protect them from lawnmowers and other yard tools.

  5. Replace Your Old Timer with a New Smart Timer

With your new sprinkler heads in place in your yard, it's time for the step that ties everything together. You will need a smart, WiFi-enabled irrigation timer, which should come as part of your smart irrigation system. If you plan to handle this step yourself, make sure to follow all safety precautions for working with electricity. If you don't feel comfortable working with electricity, it's easy to find a professional electrician to handle this step. Once you have followed all necessary safety precautions, you can remove your old timer and mark where the wires are located. Then, it's as simple as installing the new timer in the same location and connecting it to the WiFi network in your home. With a WiFi-enabled smart irrigation system, you will now be able to monitor and control your irrigation remotely.
