Tips for Adding a Walk-In Closet to Your Home

Walk-In Closet Tips

You've found the perfect house for you. Of all the Naples homes for sale, this one is your favorite. There's only one thing it's missing, and that's a walk-in closet. That's no problem, though. With a little DIY ingenuity, you can build one yourself. Here are a few tips.

  • Location
The first step is to choose where your walk-in closet will be. Ideally, it should be a room adjacent to the master bedroom. Depending on how big a room it is and how big a closet you want, you can use the entire room or annex a section of it. Take measurements of your building space, floor to ceiling and wall to wall.

  • Blueprints
Before you start construction, draw up a plan for what you want your closet to look like. Where will the shelves be? What kind of door do you want? Will you add lighting? Walk the space a few times and measure carefully to make sure you have room for everything you want.

  • Permits
To do remodeling on your house, you may need a permit - particularly if you're adding lighting or an electrical outlet. Check with the local building department to see what you need, let them know how much work you're planning on doing, using your blueprint as a reference, and get all permits in order before you start construction.

  • Wall Installation
Pull up any carpet or tack strips in the space where your closet will be, and remove the baseboards. If the closet is taking up only part of the room, measure the length of the space you'll be using, and find a stud in the walls on each side to anchor your back wall to. Draw a line from floor to ceiling along with the two studs. Use these two lines as a guide to help you install your back wall. If you're installing more than one wall, repeat the process for each additional wall you're putting in.

  • Shelves
Now that you've got the skeleton built of the room that will be your walk-in closet, it's time to put it in storage. Add shelves along the walls, and put in a few rods for hanging clothes. Again, you'll want to find studs in the existing walls, so you know exactly where to anchor the shelves.

  • Drawers
Build a few drawers into the shelving as well. Measure a small space between an upper and lower shelf, cut a few boards of the proper length, and install tracks so the drawer can slide in and out. You could just put a premade dresser or armoire into the closet, but by measuring and building the drawers yourself, you can decide just how many you need, what size they are, where they're positioned, etc.

  • Lighting
It's important to be sure your walk-in closet is well-lit. The easiest and most effective way to install lighting in your closet is with LED strips. They're fairly simple to install, and you can put in as many as you need to provide sufficient lighting for space. You can even install lights in different colors if you want. The sky's the limit.
