Prepare Your Home for Hurricane Season

Hurricane Season Prep

Your home is one of your most important investments, so taking extra precautions during hurricane season is one of the best things local homeowners can do. While no one wants to envision having to deal with the worst, it's always best to be prepared in the event disaster strikes. As a result, our real estate agents always recommend incorporating hurricane season preparation into your annual summer home maintenance routine.

Preparing for a hurricane doesn't have to be a difficult or time-consuming process. In fact, there are several easy things you can do to prepare your home and your family. Below are some tips:

  1. Schedule A Roof Inspection
Your roof is the most important line of defense when it comes to protecting your property from a severe storm or hurricane. Making sure it's in good shape before hurricane season starts is always a wise idea. A roof inspector can ensure your roofing materials are sturdy and in place and can check for holes, cracks, or damage that could result in leaks or flooding. You don't want to wait until it's too late to discover your roof is in need of repair.

  2. Clear The Lawn
Before hurricane season begins, it's usually a good idea to start packing away any lawn furniture, yard decor, toys, fire pits, or garden tools. Any loose items can easily be turned into projectiles and can cause serious property damage or injury. Once summer nears its end, take a walk around the yard and move any unsecured items into the garage or basement.

  3. Review Utility Shutoffs
In the event of an emergency, you must be able to quickly locate shut-off valves for your water, gas, and electricity. Make it a point each year to remind yourself how to quickly access utility shut-offs and familiarize yourself with how to use them.

  4. Protect Your Windows, Doors, and Garage Door
Windows and entryways are often the first things damaged during a hurricane. Consider investing in shutters to protect your windows, or at the very least, ensure you have some plywood or boarding on hand. Doors and garage doors can easily blow inwards, so consider reinforcing them with storm braces.

  5. Trim Trees And Shrubs
Hurricane winds can easily decimate trees and shrubs, so if you have any overgrown landscaping, now is the time to trim them. Be sure to eliminate any tree branches hanging over your home as they could cause serious damage to your roof.

  6. Create A Hurricane Kit
A severe hurricane has the potential to knock out power for several days. As a result, you should create a hurricane kit with all of the essentials you'd need to survive for up to three days without electricity. At a minimum, be sure to include batteries, a first aid kit, blankets, garbage bags, food, and water. Store your kit in a safe but easily accessible location in your home.

Taking simple steps to prepare your home for hurricane season every year is the best way to protect your property and investment. For more tips on preparing your home for Florida weather, contact us today.
